Steps to Becoming a Certified Medical Assistant

Thinking of working in the medical field, where the work can be very rewarding and exciting, but being a doctor is not what you want to do. There are still so many opportunities for people who want to help others in a medical setting. For example, you could become a certified medical assistant. While it is not mandatory that medical assistants be certified, it is highly recommended by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.) Certified medical assistants often have better job prospects than the non-certified.

The very first question that you must answer, when considering whether this profession Is this the right one for you is, do you really want to become a medical asistant?. Even medical assistants with certification may still have to do grunt work like answering phones and maintaining patient records. However, you will also possibly be doing things like taking blood samples and performing simple tasks like blood pressure readings and sometimes vaccinations. It all depends on the rules established by your state and where you work. It is important to be the type of person who can handle graphic medical sights (like blood) and care for patients without becoming attached to them. This is an area where many struggle, there are nurses whose bedside manner is gruff and cold, while others are too involved in their patient's pain and get stressed. It is important to find a happy medium in this area.

After you have satisfied yourself that this is the job for you, your next step is to find an acredited educational program. These are often offered by vocational schools and 1 to 2 year colleges. Although vocational schools are most associated with teens in high school, some offer adult programs as well. And, small colleges often have night classes for working adults with other responsibilities. You can even take a distance learning course, although not all of your training and education can be done in this way. An internship at a physician's office is a very important part of your training.

Your last step after graduating as a certified medical assistant is to sit the CMA exam. It is given three times per year at over 200 United States testing sites. You may obtain a job as a medical assistant before you take your certification exam. After becoming certified, you may want to look at the next step up which is Registered Medical Assistant or RMA and requires more experience before the exam can be taken.
