What is a Registered Medical Assistant?

You've probably heard of the job or career field of medical assistant but are wondering what exactly constitutes a registered medical assistant. The RMA, as commonly abbreviated, is a professional who has not only completed their education and training but also taken a certification exam that allows them to use the title of RMA in their career field. It is extremely important that all professionals in the medical field be adequately trained and have plenty of hands-on experience before they even consider job hunting.

There are all kinds of duties or tasks this type of assistant may do. On the medical side of things, a medical assistant might draw blood for tests, collect urine samples and send specimens to the lab, sterilize instruments, administer vaccines or medications, take temperatures, blood pressure readings and consult with the patient on various medical issues. Then there is the other side of the job, which may include filing papers, answering phones and setting up appointments, just for example. Your exact job duties may vary depending on where you work.

Before you get excited or ahead of yourself, it is important that you understand that you will need to study no less than one to two years before you are ready to take your exam. Before taking a certification exam, you will need to have graduated from an accredited medical assistant educational program. It helps to use RMA study guides and test preparation materials because the importance of this exam cannot be understated, successful completion can help you land jobs and earn more money. Of course your pay is another thing that depends on where you work, what you do and how long you've been working. As a general rule, medical assistants earn between $20,000 and $30,000 a year starting out, usually somewhere in the middle of the two figures.

There are other positions above registered medical assistant that you can aim for in the future. Some employers will help you pay to attend nursing school if you decide you want to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse (RN.) From there you may go on to become a nurse practitioner, the closest thing to a doctor you can become without actually being one. Nurse practitioners can see patients on their own and write prescriptions just like doctors can. Whether you remain a medical assistant or pursue higher learning is up to you. It just depends on your priorities, goals and how much time you can devote to education.
